For the first volume of our WTP tour CD I picked Chad’s song “Riding a Bike”. I think I was listening to a lot of Ani DiFranco at the time. The plan was to cover this song in an early acoustic Ani style with a guitar and just a few other sounds. Chad’s performance on Used To Dream was just him and an acoustic guitar. When I started producing this track I really wasn’t sure how the vocal style would differ from Chad’s version. I think we overlap styles a bit but I didn’t want to just repeat Chad’s performance style from Used To Dream. The whole idea of doing this cover CD project of ours was to take a song as-written, break it down and reconstruct it in our own way. So that’s what I set out to do.
I changed up the guitar part a little just by exploring a few different voicings and doubling the guitar track in the mix. I really enjoy the part that I came up with. It drives the song a bit and after I added a little string pad and shaker, the song just carries from verse to verse as I had planned it. I had a lot of fun recording this track. Don’t be surprised if somewhere down the road I release a Best of Chad Perrone cover CD of my own.
